My family is recovering from a long and exhausting season of loss. So the arrival of our newest member brings joy in the midst of sorrow. He arrived two weeks ahead of schedule, but really, he was right on time.

I had been invited to be in the delivery room for his birth. The sister in me wanted to be there to support my sister at this precious time. The photographer in me wanted to be there to capture the intimacy of the labor. And the mama in me wanted to be there to experience the miracle of delivering a baby. Not knowing if I will ever get to deliver a baby of my own, it was a gift to be present for the birth of this nephew of mine.

Tanner made it look easy and Charlie made a fast entry into the world. It was amazing.

David: Part 2

He won’t remember his first days. He won’t remember the tears in everyone’s eyes the first time they saw him. He won’t remember the way he cried every time his diaper had to be changed or the frustration of trying to learn to eat. But I hope, that deep down, he remembers the love he received from family and friends.

David, you are a gift. One that I’m so privileged to love.

It was 4:15am when my phone buzzed. The text was from my sister and she was officially in labor. I made it to the hospital 30 minutes before she began to push, and I got to see Tanner one last time before she became a mother. She gave birth to a beautiful and healthy baby boy, my precious nephew, David Callahan Peterson.

This was one of those days I will never forget.
